RE: Best Route thru Atlanta

... I think what scares most people is the speed the nuts are doing on 285 24/7 285 - the road number is also the speed limit, right? :)Many years ago one section was clocked at an average of 88 MPH. AVERAGE! Anywhere from 55 to 105 cruising speed. Learning to drive here was a hoot lemme tell ya.

RE: Best Route thru Atlanta

It sorta depends on when you get to Atlanta. The past few months, there has been a lot of work going on downtown during the weekends. Also there is rush hour and ball games to contend with. If you can check this site before you get to Atlanta or have someone else do it for you and call, it can be a big help. www.georgianavigator.com click on the Atlanta map on the left side of the pageWhat they said. It's actually nearly six of one half dozen the other. It's pretty close to the same distance either way, 285 will be a bit easier with an RV than 75 through midtown because of the way the ramps are done for the 20-75 exchange. If you come through at about 3:30 or later stay on 285 until you get to I-675 and take that south. It's a few extra miles but you'll bypass about three of solid traffic at the 75-675 merge. It's always bad, but right now they're doing work there so it backs up for miles.

RE: Is This Possible?

If the genset isn't running during this you could have gotten a bit of trash in the needle and seat for the getset. Gas would bypass the seat, out the carb, and either into the oil of the genset or out the exhaust pipe as vapor. Engines sometimes stop with the valves with both valves open, it's called overlap, and going down the road wind going by the exhaust will cause a draft effect pulling air through the stopped engine. The real test would be to block the line either by clamping it off or plug it, then drive it and check the mileage. The length has nothing to do with mileage, but a bit of trash in the genset carb would explain it.

RE: storing my truck for a couple of years

You esclated it when you did the cute little rolling eyes smiley. You started it, I just set you straight. No name calling, chum is is a friendly term, short for saying my friend or the like. Checking the owners manual is a good thing, it was this that got the response. "Watch out for personal advise on home brewed ideas. As far as driving it a couple times a month, I don't even consider doing that to mine and it is located at my residence. Now ya see there, you have another idea." Tires deveolp flat spots fairly quick, seals dry out, belts develop bends, pulleys rust. Driving from time to time prevents that. So how's that for an idea? You should work on communication skills. Have a nice day.

RE: storing my truck for a couple of years

gene a lot of operator's manual have info the manufacturer recommends for storage. I don't know about yours but I recommend checking there if you have not. Watch out for personal advise on home brewed ideas. As far as driving it a couple times a month, I don't even consider doing that to mine and it is located at my residence. Now ya see there, you have another idea. :RI've only spent a career working on these things, I'm sure you know far better than I though. Nothing home brewed about it, everything except covering while outside is direct from the General Motors policy book on long term sales lot storage. You simply don't know who you're talking about there chum. Except the mothballs, that's just to keep things fresh. Seen it work myself. If you don't have anything better to offer than read his owners manual, keep your smartarse comments elsewhere.

RE: storing my truck for a couple of years

Diesel fuel stays pretty stable, so it's not too much of an issue. Top the tank up to prevent moisture build up in the tank, I think Stabil is good for diesel also, check the label. There are diesel stabilizers out there. If it's covered storage then crack the windows a bit, throw a battery tender on it. If out side then get a good quality cover for it and leave the windows closed just in case. Change the oil just before storing. Best bet would be putting it on stands to prevent flat spots on the tires, but that's usually not an option. Absolute best thing would be to let someone have it to drive a couple of times a month, but again that's sometimes not an option. Other than that, just put it in a good safe area. EDIT-Mothballs. Put some mothballs under the seats. A guy that restores cars said he does that during off season storage. A few in a tray under each front seat.

RE: What's wrong with my RV

OK, the stumble leads me back to being suspicious of the EGR valve. It should have one even being non catalyst.

RE: What's wrong with my RV

Thanks for the responses so far. I'm in Central California near san Jose. I'm not sure this is a bad coil pack as its the 7.5 liter V-8 not the 6.8 liter V-10. Did the V-8 come with multiple coils in the ignition system? Also the unit has 86,000 miles on the odometer if this helps with the dianogsis process. How difficult is it to replace the EGR value? I mean is it something I could reach from the top of the dog house. Also the unit has the Banks power pack system installed with those big headers. It's a "non catalyst" emissions engine. I've been told that all the Ford F53 motorhome chassis from late 1993 on until they started using the 6.8 liter engine where "non-catalyst." So does a non-catalyst system still have an EGR value? The 7.5 of that era had a regular TFI distributer system, so a coil pack is out of the question. If it's a 2006 model I'd agree. The EGR valve is easy to replace on those, but you need a big adjustable wrench. The gas supply tube has a huge nut attaching it to the valve. Yes you can do it with the doghouse off. Should have a smooth pipe going to a devise bolted to the passenger side of the S shaped aluminum horn coming off the intake. The devise is the EGR valve. Cast iron bottom, stamped steel silver top. Since it's been modified I have a couple of questions. Does it actually shake the rig, or just sound like it's running rough? Idling out of gear does it sound the same and get worse in gear, or is it smooth in park then get rough when putting it in gear drags it down a couple hundred RPM?

RE: What's wrong with my RV

It can be minor, or serious. The minor one is a stuck open EGR valve. That will cause a rough idle then smooth out going down the road. Serious would be a burned exhaust valve, but that's not too common nowadays. Another possibility is a simple vacuum leak. The 7.5 had a big vacuum line going into the back of the intake plenum that was bad about cracking and leaking. The MAP sensor reads off that and in addition to the air leak it gets a weak signal which really whacks it out. I'd lean toward the EGR valve being stuck open though, that's most common.

RE: Photo storage sites?

Smugmug is $39.95 a year and unlimited use. I've uploaded four GB at once before. You can order prints, and you can allow others to print also.

RE: You Might Be An RVer If. . . . .

You have to handle poo regularly and don't mind. Too much. You pay way more a year than you'd ever spend on hotel rooms to have something you have to drag or drive at half the MPG to spend an hour getting settled in and an hour packing to leave along with managing water, waste, generator time, cramped quarters, and sweeping the floor every hour because you track in more dirt than you can imagine. And wouldn't have it any other way.

RE: Mixed 12 volt and 6 volt system

Series up the two six volts and it should be OK. Over that span go up a couple of sizes on your wire between the 12V and two sixes.

RE: Install a NEW Sound system run by battery

I'd go to a local stero shop that installs systems for those window rattlers. They're usually fairly good at woodworking and can build whatever to fit where the fridge was. I'd go with a car system. More efficient than running a house style system through an inverter, and can be as loud as you want. Use high capacity batteries, I'd go with four. Run on two, charge two. If you're playing music for a crowd then nobody will notice the genset running if it's a quiet version. Use a regular battery charger to charge your extras, but don't charge the set that's in use. That'll toast your gear, don't ask how I know.

RE: Vent cap broke and blew off

Well now you have a good excuse to install a Fantastic Vent Fan in it's place! :BExactly what I'm going to do. My cover is fine, but the fan blade itself came apart. One of the Spring projects! Just gotta decide which one.

RE: how to pump in anti-freeze

I caught so much flack about it or people linking to water heater bypass kits or how their brand new 5er already has it that I had the thread deleted. It's not worth it, or even asking a question sometimes. Having a bad day there SKnight?? :BNo, but I went to the trouble to take photos, write it up, and didn't get one, not one, positive reply. A lot of the time this forum lacks manners.

RE: how to pump in anti-freeze

I posted a cheap easy way to install an antifreeze injection system for less than $10 and with parts you can get at Lowes today. I caught so much flack about it or people linking to water heater bypass kits or how their brand new 5er already has it that I had the thread deleted. It's not worth it, or even asking a question sometimes. PM me if you're interested in details.

RE: Towing a Jeep Wrangler on a Tow Dolly?

As long as it's front wheel drive, it can be towed any distance on a dolly front wheels up. If it's all wheel drive, then no it can't.

RE: I need disc brake help bad...

Real simple. Some lugnut didn't tighten the bolts properly when they were installed. I don't care if you're using a toggle switch to activate them up front, the brackets shouldn't fall off. Period, end of discussion. Since it's a 2007 model and I'm assuming someone else hasn't had them apart, I'd call the dealer where you bought it, demand reimbursement for the first repair, and what it costs now. If that doesn't fly, demand to speak to the manufacturer rep. Follow the chain, it works better that way. Plus the dealer may hop to and fix it. Take pictures, lots 'o pictures.

RE: Is DirecTV worth it?

When you set up the dish on a tripod on, say, 75 feet of cable, and then go site seeing for the entire day, what stops the thief? I would have thought thought roof mounted was more secure. Maybe the parts are so inexpensive that there is not enough value in them? You set it up a few times you can stow it, leave, and put it right back up easliy. Especially when setting up in the same spot, it's point and shoot. And they're so cheap, they're not worth stealing. I just gave one away!
